Timothy Hagen (he/they) is an internationally acclaimed flutist, praised for his "technical virtuosity and musical sensitivity" (NewMusicBox) and “real flair” (The Well-Tempered Ear). Awards include First Prize and the award for Best Performance of the Newly Composed Work at the 2016 Myrna W. Brown Artist Competition, Second Prize at the Australian International Flute Competition, the Jack Smith Memorial Award for Most Promising Talent at the Pasadena Showcase House Instrumental Competition, two Artist Grants from the Léni Fé Bland Foundation, and a Graduate Scholarship from the Jack Kent Cooke Foundation. He was also the only American advanced to the semifinals of the 2007 Jeunesses Musicales International Flute Competition in Serbia.

Hagen is Principal Flute of the Missouri Symphony and from 2018-26 was Principal Flute of the Dubuque Symphony, where he performed multiple times as a concerto soloist, most notably in the premiere of his own Concerto for Flute and Chamber Orchestra. Over the course of his career, he has acted as a guest musician with ensembles throughout the country, including the Minnesota Orchestra, Milwaukee Symphony, Oregon Symphony, Grant Park Orchestra, Dallas Wind Symphony, San Antonio Symphony, Eugene Symphony, Kalamazoo Symphony, Peoria Symphony, and many others. In addition, he has performed as a recital soloist at New York's Lincoln Center and 92nd Street Y, an orchestral musician at the Hot Springs and Las Vegas Music Festivals, and a chamber musician at the Atlantic Music Festival and the Norfolk and Austin Chamber Music Festivals.

The depth and breadth of Hagen's experience as an educator distinguish him. He is Assistant Professor of Flute and Coordinator of Woodwinds at Central Washington University and conductor of the Bellevue Youth Symphony’s Flute Choir. He previously taught at Clarke University, Austin Peay State University, Central Michigan University, University of North Carolina-Greensboro, University of Wisconsin-Whitewater, Oklahoma State University, The University of Texas at Austin, and Brookhaven College, in addition to appointments as a teaching artist with Lincoln Center, the Los Angeles Philharmonic, and the Dallas Symphony, among other respected institutions. He is also an instructor for online conservatory tonebase, where his courses can be found alongside those by flutists from top musical institutions such as the Juilliard School, Rice University, University of Michigan, Peabody Institute, and the symphony orchestras of Boston, St. Louis, and Detroit. His former students have found success on many paths as regional and national competition laureates, orchestral and chamber musicians, university teachers, band directors, sound healers, and epidemiologists, to name just a few areas. He is in high demand as a guest teacher, clinician, and speaker at universities, festivals, and conventions throughout the United States and Canada and is frequently called upon as an adjudicator regionally and nationally.

As a composer, Hagen has won awards from the National Flute Association, American Composers Forum, and MetLife Creative Connections. His works, published by Owl Glass Music, have been commissioned by organizations throughout the United States, including the Texas Flute Society, Floot Fire, 45th Parallel Universe, Texas Christian University, the Elgin Youth Symphony, and the Dubuque Symphony. His pedagogical and scholarly writing is published by Owl Glass and in national and international journals, such as the NFA’s Flutist Quarterly and the British Flute Society's Pan.

Hagen received his Doctor of Musical Arts from The University of Texas at Austin, Professional Studies Certificate from the Colburn School, Master of Music from the University of Southern California, and Bachelor of Music from the University of North Carolina School of the Arts. His teachers include Jim Walker, Marianne Gedigian, Philip Dunigan, Renée Siebert, Tadeu Coelho, Chelsea Czuchra, Felicia McNaught, and Tina Ballard.
